Josh Billings, Mark Twain, Petroleum V. Nasby |
Josh Billings was the pen name of 19th century American humorist Henry Wheeler Shaw (21 April 1818 – 14 October 1885). He was perhaps the second most famous humor writer and lecturer in the United States in the second half of the 19th century after Mark Twain, although his reputation has not endured so well with later generations. He is noted for his many pithy quotes. One that caught my attention is--
Life consists not in holding good cards but in playing those you hold well.
My wish is to live life well with what I have. And to do so with peace and confidence.
I love quotes and I like this one. I will write it down in my quote book.
ReplyDeleteVery nicely said! We sang the song "Great is Thy Faithfulness" this morning and the line, "All I have needed Thy hand hath provided" really stuck me this morning as I was playing the piano. It is so true, God has always provided for my family. Thanks for the additional reminder!

Hi, Marti! I came over from Zoanna, Penchant for Pens. I love your post. I once 'took up camp' in Phil. 4:9. Things at school were in political upheaval, and I latched onto Philippians.
ReplyDeleteYour blog site is like a mini-vacation, where I must visit regularly.
